1.Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project has started drilling
ceremonially.
On August 4, 2001,in Donghai County, Jiangsu province, Wan Guoquan,
Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Conference pressed the start-button of the drill rig.
This declared that Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project
which has been paying close attention by global geology circle and
whose drill hole's depth was designed to be five kilometers was commenced
completely. Vice Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulation message
for this. More than 100 geology researchers and engineering technicians
work hard near the coast of the east China Sea day and night. To the
midnight of December 31,2001, the depth of the borehole has amounted
to 1276.98 meters. A passel of very valuable drilling cores, debris,
layer fluid samples, geophysical logging samples and other related
information have been obtained. Scientists have set out to carry out
research on earth crust's compositions, structure and the related
information. The engineering indicates that the new stage of national
geoscience and earth exploration technology is coming.
2.The pace of regional geological survey in Tibet plateau was
quickened comprehensively.
CGS strengthened the utilization of the new technologies and measures
so as to accelerating the pace of regional geological survey at
the scale of 1:250000 in the areas of Tibet plateau, where without
geological mapping before. More than 700 geologists came from more
than 30 geological survey and research units marched to the snowfield,
setting their feet in 642,000 Km2. They have discovered a lot of
geologically significant geologic bodies, tectonic belts, palebiota
fossils and geology prospecting clues and gained a great lot of
field practical data which reflect the uplifting process and its
effect on climate and environment. All these have theoretical and
practical meanings in researching the evolution, tectonic framework,
stratigraphic division, resources and geological environment assessment
and climate changes of Tibet plateau.
3.The important results in gas hydrates survey and research
in China's national ocean regions.
Carbonate encrustation pictures which are direct indications of
gas hydrates presence have been taken in the Xisha trough after
widespread geophysical signs (BSR) had been found in the Xisha trough
which can proved the existence of gas hydrates. And at the same
time it is for the first time that BSR signs were discovered both
in othe ocean regions of China, which shows the huge broad prospect
of the existence of gas hydrate resources in China's sea areas.
Through preliminary evaluation, the prospective resources reserve
of gas hydrate only in the Xisha trough is in excess of 4 billion
tons oil equivalence and the prospective reserve of the whole continental
slope area of northern part of the South China Sea is more considerable
than the former. And in the meanwhile, the first Gas Hydrate Simulation
in Laboratory has been made in Qingdao recently. This laboratory
and experiment were self-developed and built by China. And its intelligence
property belongs to china completely. In China at present it is
the only laboratory where we can carry out gas hydrate simulation
experiment in sea sediments.
4. The significant progresses in the assessment on multi-metal
silver ore in Yuxinan area.
Through strengthening comprehensive research, adjusting the train
of thought and changing prospecting direction, remarkable results
have been achieved in exploration work in the main multi-metal silver
mineralization provinces of Yuxinan area. Up to now we have ascertained
that lead and zinc reserves is in excess of 3000 thousand tons and
silver reserves is up to 6000 tons. The prospective reserves are
expected to increase substantially and for this reason Yuxinan area
will grow into a third lead and zinc resources exploration base
at national level.
5. Ultra-mega copper ore enrichment belt has been discovered
in Gangdise area of Tibet.
In Gangdise mineralization belt of Tibet, more than 80 geochemical
exploration anomalies, 30 mineral occurrences and 10 deposits have
been discovered. The existing exploration results indicate that
it is probable to find out mega or ultra-mega deposits in Jiama,
Chongjiang, Tingguan and Qulong areas. We predicted, through comprehensive
survey and assessment work for two to three years, that the whole
Gangdise metallogenic belt will become a third copper mineral belt
at world level of our country with great probability. The discovery
of this metallogenic belt is of greatly strategic significance for
the development of Brahmaputra, Lhasa River and Nianchu River areas
and the construction of Qing-Zang railway economic belt.
6. The important and large numbers of results in multi-goal
geochemical survey which mainly aimed at agricultural environment
in economically developed areas.
For the first time, we developed experimental unit work of multi-goal
geochemical survey which mainly aimed at agriculture environment
in economically developed and densely inhabited areas of our country,
finishing geochemical survey of 52 kinds elements in the areas which
cover more than 60 thousand square kilometers and mapped the macro-geochemical
sketch, which revealed regional distribution scale, range and characteristics
of heavy metal pollution .All these results provide important archives
for ecological environment and soil quality assessment, basic geology
and resources potential prediction.
7.The significant progresses in underground water survey
We have made important progresses in finding emergency water supply
areas, in underground water investigation and environmental geological
survey in Beijing area ,one of the main areas which are shortage
of water of eastern China ; made breakthrough in karst underground
water survey , ascertaining a emergency water supply area in Huirou
area whose emergency water supply capacity amounts to 120 million
cubic meters per year. In western droughty areas, the important
progresses have been attained in surveying and assessing karst water
around Ordos basin and surveying underground water in Cretaceous
system artesian basin. According to the preliminary assessment,
the general make-up quantity of karst water around the Ordos Basin
is 1.41 billion cubic meters per year. More than 460 water wells
have been built in other areas where it is very difficult for people
and domestic animals to have water for living, which to a great
degree relieved local serious water scarcity problem.
8. The preliminary results in environmental geological survey
in disaster areas where the inhabitants suffer from floods of middle
reaches of Changjiang.
We have finished compartmentalization work on neotectonism in
disaster areas of middle reaches of Changjiang; have carried out
reaches division and analysis work in which we took flood forming
into consideration and as center and preliminarily we have brought
forward floods prevention and mending measures for every reach .We
have put forward nature environment regulating ,a new conception
from the two points of view : geoscience evaluation regulate and
changing disadvantages into advantages .
9. The two significant geology research results have won the
China State Awards.
The two projects: 1:500000 digital geology map data base of the
People's Republic of China, finished by CGS and other institutes,
and Regional geochemistry and agriculture & human beings' health,
finished by National Geologiical Experimental Center, CGS and other
institutes, have won the second prize of China State Awards for
progresses in science and technology. 1:500000 digital geology map
data base of the People's Republic of China has been presented for
more than 200 national organizations and institutes, such as the
General Office of the State Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
China Academy of Geological Sciences and China University of Geoscience,
which was a successful experiment for geological survey results'
services to the society.
10. Field digital collection system has been developed successfully.
CGS has successfully developed Field digital collection system
for geological survey which integrated palmtop computer, pocket
GPS receiver, digital camera, digital tape pen and digital vidicon
etc.. By using GIS technology the system can reflect field GPS placement
results on relief maps and remote sensing maps which have been saved
in palmtop computer, making main flow which was composed of recording
complex map and text information exactly in field, drawing geology
pencil sketch and data processing come into preliminary information.
This to a great extent improves the precision of geology work, making
work efficiency to be improved by 5 to 10 times and supplied our
country's technology gap in information spot digital collection
of geological survey.
