1. Unitary deployment and organizing implementation of the nation's basic and public geological investigation and mineral resources assessment; to organize the implementation of the national strategic mineral exploration and geological investigation for some national key engineering projects at the earlier stage of construction.
2. Organizing implementation of the investigation and evaluation of hydrogeology, engineering geology and environmental geology, and carrying out geological environmental monitoring, geo-hazards investigation, prediction and pre-warning and the mitigation for some special cases.
3. Engaging in frontier and fundamental geological research, and the application research related to the geological survey and mineral exploration; the development, introduction and generalization of the new technology, new methodology and new expertise of geological survey and mineral exploration.
4. Mandated by the Ministry of Land and Resources, drawing up the rules, regulations and standards for geological survey and mineral exploration; organizing the quality monitoring and inspection and control of some nation's key projects.
5. Set up information network system of geological survey and mineral exploration, and providing geo-information and archive data for the public.
6. Conducting international exchange and cooperation being focused on the geological survey and mineral exploration, including the geological investigation in foreign countries.
7. Centralized administration of the national geological survey force. Exercising project link and professional direction to the provincial geological teams that undertaking national geological investigation tasks. Supervising the implementation of projects and managing the project results.
8. Undertake other work mandated by the Ministry of Land and Resources.
