| China Institute of
Geo-Environment Monitoring (CIGEM), directly under the China Geological
Survey, is mainly responsible for organizing and implementing
national
geological environment monitoring; for proposing the scenarios
for national geological hazards forecasting; for conducting the
investigation, research, monitoring and evaluation of major geological
hazards; for collecting, analysising, disseminating national geological
monitoring data; and for publicizing the geological environment
information efficiently via the website of China Geological Environment
Information.
CIGEM is reorganized with the combination of the former China
Institute of Hydrogeology
and Engineering Geology Exploration and National Station for Geological
Environment
Monitoring. Following activities have been conducted in the parst
30 years:
Regional hydrogeological survey and assessment over an area of
one third of whole China;
Environmental geological investigation along 10 more rivers,
including the Yangtze River,and
the Yellow River:
Investigation, prevention and control of geological hazards over
20 sites, including
Lian-zi- ya dangerous rock and Huang-la-shi landslide;
Risk assessment for the massive gas pipeline construction extending
from west China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region to Shanghai;
Establishment of national geological environment monitoring system
and information network.A geological environmental monitoring network
consisting of a national monitoring institute,29 provincial monitoring
stations, 217 local monitoring stations and 20,739 monitoring spots
have been built;
Responsible for more than 30 national key projects, among which
4 have won National Scientific and Technological Award, 30 have
won the First Class or the Second Class Award, issued by the Ministry.
